Messages from family & friends

Paul was gifted with an innate ability to see the whimsical side of life. And that talent traversed through the camera’s lens, onto the paper, and into our senses like cool water from a Carolina stream. A part of our creative community has made his transition...and we are happy to have had the experience of him. Peace and everlasting love to the family, friends, and to all of those wearing a heavy heart.
— Jay Anthony Terry
To best express my admiration for this amazing man, I am reposting a quote from Paul’s Instagram account. He truly embodied this way of life and made the world a better place.

”In the end, only three things matter: how much you loved, how gently you lived, and how gracefully you let go of things not meant for you.” —Buddha
— Josie Duncan
Paul first inspired me with an M&M. He came to show his portfolio to one of my advanced photo classes at UNF in the mid 90s. The one piece that stuck with me was a poster of a magnified M&M. He talked about mounting multiple sets of bellows on his Hasselblad to achieve the proper magnification and focus. I went on to assist for my adjunct professor, Stuart Findley, but if it wasn’t for Stu, I probably would have worked with Paul. He and I had good relations in the photo world and a mutual respect. I really enjoyed his lifestyle photos and grasp of technology. I wish nothing but the best for his family and look forward to celebrating his life at the paddle out.
— Daniel Barley
Paul, will miss your infectious smile and sense of humor. Rest in peace my friend.
— Hilda Case
I never had the opportunity to meet Paul. It was through instagram, however, I was lucky enough to connect with him. He has been a huge inspiration for my own photography and he seemed like an incredible person. I wish it was under better circumstances, but I am so glad there is a site to commemorate him. My thoughts are with his family and friends.
— Robert Mathews
For Nic and Taylor, I am sending each of you a hug and prayers at this time. I know that you always enjoyed your dad’s visits when he volunteered in your Kindergarten classrooms. My husband, Jerry, remembers and shared your dad’s passion for photoshop in the beginning of your dad’s career, when he was a client.
Sending prayers for your dad and the entire family. Your dad was a wonderfully creative, giving and adventurous person and will be greatly missed.
— Vicki and JP "Jerry" VanGundy

i heard paul died today and i started to cry because i only saw him at moxie for about 2 hours. i also made a lego minifigure to remember him. i was in tears for a long time because he was so nice.

Words are inadequate to express my condolences. I had not known until this morning that Paul had been ill, so I am in shock and lost for words. I am heartbroken for the family.

I first met Paul around 15 years or so ago when he gave a presentation to professional photographers and saw him again a few weeks ago when he gave a presentation at a local photo club. When I heard he was going to be there, I came out specially that night a few weeks ago to see him, as I so admire his work. He was such an inspiration to all.

He will be greatly missed by all whose lives he has touched. I am praying that God will give strength, comfort and peace to the family and that He will keep them in the palm of His hand in the days ahead.
— Diane Macdonald
I am devastated and heartbroken over the news. Such a sad day to lose a man so full of life and so kind and generous. Paul was “one of a kind” and I feel blessed to have had a chance to work with him and to have called him a friend. I just feel speechless... Truly heartbroken.

Love and prayers to his family and friends. I know that Paul knew how loved he was by all.
— Tammy Britton
I am an employee of OptaComp. While I did not know Judy personally, I have met her. Judy, my prayers go out to you and your family at this most difficult time in your life. Remember all of the good times and keep talking about funny stories, as this helped me when my twin brother passed.

— Alexis Van Cort
I was hopeful Paul would make it. So sad to hear of his passing. We’ll miss his positive attitude in the community he served so well. This is a loss for the First Coast. May God bless his family and close friends.
— Eddie Pitts
Paul was one of the kindest and most compassionate people that I have had the good fortune to meet. As I look back at the too little time spent with him I most vividly recall how inspirational and supportive he was.
I will miss that easy smile and giving spirit.
My love and prayers to his family and friends
— Robert Clark
Paul - our hearts are broken. This just cannot be true. Your heart was so kind. Your soul so genuine. I can still remember a hot, blistering July summer day sitting in the back of your truck and watching you roll around in dirt, bushes, bugs and some of the most disgusting “questionable” items while on location trying to get the perfect SWAT shot for us. I remember thinking, “God this guy’s good.” Your legacy lives on in the memories you created through the lens and in the stories told by your friends and family. You were truly amazing.
— Heather Fraser
I am so saddened to discover Paul’s illness and death. I never met him personally, just through Instagram interaction. As a fellow photographer I enjoyed and admired his work. As a fellow human I admired his spirit and obvious love of life and the people he shared it with. I am planning on moving to coastal Florida soon and had him on my list of people to connect with and get to know better. Not to be.
My heart breaks for his much loved friends, family and partners.
— Greg Wostrel
Fig, next week I’ll be riding up for Bike Week. Was hoping we would get together as we’ve done in the past. So this time I’ll have a beer for you and watch the crowd without you. If any of you are going to be there as well call me and we can share a toast to our riding buddy.

Paul, It’s with a heavy heart the memories come rushing in after hearing of your illness and then you were gone. You always had a moment for me if I dropped in unannounced at the Studio.

When Renee Parenteau sent me the really cool shots you did with the “Girl is NOT a 4 Letter Word” skateboard sticker, I was surprised that a photographer I didn’t even know would make time on his shoot to include something like this and I loved it. But even better than the beautiful shots you took, was the way we then struck up a friendship on Instagram. It’s amazing to meet someone who reaches out like you do and is so appreciative of everyone around them. You are truly one of a kind. Sending you good thoughts for a speedy recovery! I need you back on Instagram SOON, it’s boring without you!

Hey Paul, When I think of you - I think of all the people you have inspired, including myself. I think of all the people who would call the studio and ask if they could come by and pick your brain - and while other photographers would be threatened - you never say no. I think about how every shoot I have ever worked on with you and how comfortable you make the talent or the subject feel. I think about all the things you taught me way back then and how you have always took an interest in everyones success. I think you are definitely as selfless as they come. Your kindness comes through in all that you do.. It’s evident in all the well wishes here and all are true. Cant wait to see you up and around again soon!

Keeping you in my thoughts!!

Here is the good news - I suffered not one, but two Ischemic strokes years ago, followed by open heart surgery to repair an Atrial Septal Defect in my heart that caused the two strokes. They occurred within 18 months of each other and both were followed by lots of rehab and hard work on my part to try to get back to normal. It is a fight that you can do - I’m living proof of it!!! I’m now 21 years post strokes and going strong - I suspect your story will be as successful as mine !
— Joey Wilson

Hey Paul, I remember the Dalton days (99-02), where I was supposed to art direct your photo shoots on the field at Alltel for the Jags games back in the glory days (Fred Taylor, Mark Brunnell, Tony Boselli, Keenan and Jimmy and all the greats). I thought it funny that I was to try and direct anything for a master. So you kindly gave me one of your cameras and let me roam the field and shoot whatever I wanted, and you did what you do, make beautiful pictures. I remember your family when your kids were little picking me up at the Agency for the trip to the field. That was epic. I always felt that as a young man in this city of creative talents, that you made me feel as an equal (even though I was just a newbie). Thanks for all of the advice, the encouragement and support. Here’s to making many more memories in the future my friend. Praying for a full recovery, and prayers, love and support for your family and friends. Love you man!
— Louie Preysz

Paul, Tonight I am praying and crying my eyes out about a man I have never met. I actually feel a strange kind of connection to him because he has been such a magnificent influence on my son, Sean. His name is Paul Figura and he is struggling for his life right now. It seems like I know him because ever since Sean met him I have followed his work very closely, frequently visiting his blog or FB or looking at his website. I have “on the job” images of him on my phone and computer as if he were a member of our family and videos of him which give me a glimpse into his personality. He is an extremely talented man who has shared those talents with Sean while at the same time guiding him in right directions and exposing him to wonderful new experiences and opportunities. He has been a good mentor and teacher and friend to him in every sense. He has also captured Sean in photos in ways that no one else has and thus provided me with some of my “favorites shots.” I know from Sean that he is very kind and influential to several other of his young aspiring photographer friends as well.
I pray for a miracle. I pray for Paul and his family and all of those who are so close to him. Everyone’s strength and love means so much at a time like this. I pray that those surrounding him will provide support for each other and for him during this difficult and challenging time.

My Mom wrote this when I told her the news the first night you were in the hospital. To keep my words short, I respect and admire you in many ways. You’re man whose accomplished so much that he’s wanted to do in life already. I have so much to thank for you and I know the list hasn’t ended yet. My prayers and positive thoughts are with you and I’m looking forward to the next time we spend together.
— Sean Patrick Murphy

Paul’s injury could happen to any one of us at any time. Anyone could have an unknown weakness in a brain blood vessel that simply bursts and changes life catastrophically in a matter of seconds and it could happen before you finish reading this post. All of the working out, healthy eating, pontificating on clean living and virtuous thinking is absolutely meaningless to a brain hemorrhage onset. Risk factors that don’t help include uncontrolled hypertension, but if you’re genetically predisposed to this sort of injury you’ll never know it until it happens. Knowing that this awful trauma has injured our Paul so profoundly; a robust, integrated and intelligent man, lets us know that the threat is a reality and could just as easily happen as not happen to anyone at anytime.

When I see the avalanche of love for Paul shared in just 48 hours, I am literally moved. How I want to be a person like Paul who creates such joy in people’s lives. How honored I am to have such a man as Paul as my dear friend. How I wish we could all be like Paul and embrace all the lives of all the people with whom we come in contact. What a joyful lesson there is in the overwhelming, and overwhelmingly loving and instantaneous reactions of so many to Paul’s ordeal. Paul’s inspirational point of view and ability to communicate it with his words and his totally aligned actions has never been more evident than right this minute.

In this moment it’s all about Paul’s immediate challange; in this life, it’s all about Paul’s place in the living pantheon of the people that consistantly make the world a better place for everyone in their orbit - people who search for ways to shift the balance of goodness and happiness. The vast majority of my time with Paul for so many years has been time spent laughing! I hope we can all be a lot more like Paul so we can share in his joy for life with him even more completely while we pray for him and when we hopefully, prayerfully have him given back again to us, God willing.
